.- The Origin Story -.
Hestia dropped her basket of herbs and ingredients for dinner at the door, immediately hurdling around the corner to find her wife.
“Eris!” She gasped, out of breath. She collided with her inky, black hair, taking only a fraction of a second to breathe in her lilac perfume.
“Yes...dear,” huffed Eris, paws still wet from the dishes. “What is it, sunshine?”
“An…an egg!—They have! An egg!” She beamed, again brighter than any sun Eris had ever seen. The warmth not only from her paws but her smile made Eris dry her own paws and stop what she was doing. She grasped her wife's paws and pulled her over to their love seat, forcing her to sit.
"Now, I sent you out to get herbs and ingredients for dinner. I don't remember requesting eggs, let alone only one. Explain." She sat back against the baby kiamara down pillows her wife happened to make herself - she scrounged together all the shed downy fluff from all the couples nearby and sewed them into surprisingly comfortable throw pillows. Eris didn't know how she exactly felt about sitting on a baby's old coat...but for now, it sufficed.
"Why, Eris, they just left it there! In a basket and barely covered with a blanket! If we don't do something, that poor baby will be without a mother..." Hestia began to tear up, pulling her embroidered hankey from her apron. She dabbed at her eyes, staring now at her wife. "Here—they let me take the note."
Hestia handed her wife the note with a quickly scrawled message on the crumpled paper: "Please, take care of my child."
Eris glanced at the note with trepidation, yet sighed once she had processed the situation a bit longer.
"So, you're telling me I'm supposed to stop what I'm doing and drop everything to go save an egg from orphanhood?"
"Yes!"
"Hestia."
"ERIS."
Hestia jumped from the loveseat, standing by the window. "I will bring this egg home, whether you like it or not! I may not be its mother, but I can at least keep it warm by the fire and make sure it doesn't come into harm's way. Without someone to truly care whether it survives or thrives, how good are we to say we want to make a family? That injustice would be unforgiveable... When a family makes itself known, it is not always convenient, but it is always welcome within my heart."
Hestia was now letting silent, steady tears flow down her flushed cheeks; her wife behind her sat incredulously on their oddly-homey love seat.
"I want a family with you; you know that, right?" Eris ventured, speaking to the kind back of her wife. "It may not be a babe of our own, but what if we just...saw it through? Let it hatch and see what happens afterward?"
Eris stood slowly from the love seat, moving to her wife. She place a gentle paw on her shoulder, turning her to face her. "You know I thrive off of the chaos in our lives, my dear," Eris grinned.
Hestia sniffed, looking up at her. "So...I can bring in the egg now?"
"What do you mean 'bring it in now'?" Eris narrowed her eyes at her wife, suspecting.
"Why it's just outside! The poor dear is bundled between my shawl, a blanket, some thyme, and the potatoes you wanted for soup tonight...A dreadful fit, but it's safer here than it was there!"
Eris laughed; a big, hearty laugh. "What would I do without you?" She smiled, stooping down to plant a small kiss on Hestia's lips. "Let me bring the thing in..."
Eris walked outside, grabbing the basket. Meanwhile, Hestia stood in the living room giggling to herself.
"Any second now..." She grinned.
"HESTIA! THIS EGG IS COMPLETELY GOLDEN AND HEAVIER THAN BRICKS! I SWEAR TO THE DIETIES THAT IF YOU GOT TRICKED BY MIDAS AGAIN!..."
"Midas, huh..." Hestia pondered, waiting for her beautiful wife to bring their new child in.
