Yara came to this world by a rift, from a world infused with magic--particularly, the water. He landed on the outskirts of the Wrathion Woodlands near the Bootleg Bog, where he was chased by strange creatures. They managed to find their way through a pond to Bootleg Bog itself and eked out an existence doing whatever they needed to survive. Eventually, he signed on with a pirate crew in order to escape his miserable living conditions and be on open waters.
